The best civilizations to play in every Age of Empires PC games

Age of Empires is a real-time strategy game played by most players on PC and it centers on developing one’s chosen civilization by expanding its territory, securing resources, improving the economy, and bolstering its defensive capabilities. Each Age of Empires game allows players to choose one of many civilizations available, each with its own unique abilities and specializations.

Taking that fact into account, there are some civilizations that most players believe will provide the best advantage in surviving each game’s different periods and complete the game quicker and easier. Here are the best civilizations to play in the Age of Empires main series:

Age of Empires

For the original Age of Empires game, most players believe the best civilizations to play are the Hittites, Shang, and Assyrians.

The Hittites are one of the most beginner-friendly civilizations in the game as almost all of the military technologies in the game can be accessed under it.

The Shang dynasty focuses more on economic development, allowing its villagers to invest heavily on military technology later on.

The Assyrians are the opposite of the Shang dynasty, meaning they can function well without much economic resources and their military might gives them an edge in the early stages of the game.

Age of Empires II

For Age of Empires II, most players believe the best civilizations to play are the Lithuanians, Chinese, Aztecs, Vikings, and Mayans.

The Lithuanians were added in the game’s Definitive Edition and take pride in their cavalry units which consist primarily of spearmen and skirmishers that can pierce through enemy armor. Their starting economy bonus is also noteworthy.

The Chinese are the successor civilization to the first game’s Shang dynasty whose military force rely on archers. This civilization focuses more on economic development, though, due to its huge population.

The Aztecs were added to the game’s expansion pack The Conquerors. Its military force consists of infantry units that are stronger than other infantry units in the game. Its monks greatly improve the survivability of military units due to faster monastery research.

The Vikings are another civilization that has one of the strongest infantry units in the game. However, another strong suit for this civilization is its expertise in naval warfare. As a result, both the Longboats and the Berserkergang lead the way to numerous successful village raids.

The Mayans were also added to The Conquerors and are a civilization that specializes in its resourcefulness and its focus on archers as part of its military force. The resources acquired by this civilization last longer than those from other civilizations in the game.

Age of Empires III

For Age of Empires III, most players believe the best civilizations to play are the Ottomans, Iroquois, and Indians.

The Ottomans have the advantage of being quick in developing its ranged weapons aside from possessing mighty infantry and cavalry units.

The Iroquois civilization became playable in the game’s expansion pack The WarChiefs. It is the only Native American civilization capable of having an artillery unit as it is mostly made up of ranged soldiers.

The Indians have the most well-balanced military force in the game as it offers players a wide selection of melee and ranged fighters despite limited resources due to its inability to kill livestock.

Age of Empires IV

For Age of Empires IV, most players believe the best civilizations to play are the Rus and Mongols.

The Rus have an early game advantage by being able to acquire resources quickly and effectively; subsequently fortifying their defensive lines.

The Mongols are one of the most difficult civilizations to play in the game due to their nomadic nature. Their best asset is their mobility and aggressiveness to raid.

Any player will be off to a good start as soon as they figure out how to maximize their civilization’s unique abilities and make sure their military force is strong enough to both attack and defend. Ultimately, this strategy game tests players’ decision-making skills, but picking any of the aforementioned civilizations will boost your chances of winning battles.
