The different civilizations available to play in Age of Empires IV

Age of Empires IV has already been on the market for two months, and both experienced and novice players will surely be in for a treat despite it not being a direct sequel of Age of Empires III. In this game, players will only have the option to choose one civilization from eight to develop and grow an empire from there.

Each of the civilizations playable in this game has its own strengths and unique abilities, which is why it is important to take a look at them before you play. To help you with that, here’s what you need to know about the eight civilizations:

Abbasid Dynasty

The Abbasid Dynasty is a Middle Eastern civilization that focuses on technological research and development while staying true to its Islamic faith. Civilians are able to prioritize infrastructure and accumulate resources through the civilization’s unique ability which ignores the need for designating active designers. This ability can also be applied in the military such as the construction of battering rams, siege towers, springalds, and mangonels.

The greatest strength of the Chinese is their high population and their use of gunpowder in warfare. Players can easily grow their economy through proper city planning, after which the Chinese dynasties will be established. The high amount of human resources under this civilization can also be utilized in faster research and construction and higher military numbers. This strength in numbers will be bolstered by using gunpowder to their advantage.

Delhi Sultanate

The Delhi Sultanate specializes in research and defense. Researching for upgrades is free in this civilization and it can be sped up by introducing more scholars. Meanwhile, construction of military infrastructure is under the care of infantry units but their best asset lies in their war elephants. Upgrading these gargantuan beasts for archers will maximize your defensive capabilities.

At its peak, the French is similar to the Chinese in that it could bring its population up (through its Town Center) and utilize gunpowder in warfare. However, players will have to start this civilization by enhancing trade relations and training its cavalry units which are also formidable in their own right. The military might of France relies heavily on producing armored units first before researching gunpowder and developing cannons as their main source of firepower.

The English are known for their impregnable castles which are due to their optimized alert system and efficient archery units. This civilization is also known for having the most stable and sustainable food production in Age of Empires IV; subsequently, unit production for the military will be just as reliable. Upgrades for the military aspect are more focused on its long-ranged combatants wherein the archers can be improved to become longbowmen.

Holy Roman Empire

The Holy Roman Empire is another impenetrable civilization whose people can be upgraded to boost its economy through its religious unit the Prelate. On the other hand, the military might of the Holy Roman Empire has set its sights on conquering Rome through its strong infantry units. Its Landsknechte is the Empire’s best military asset and delivers devastating area of effect damage, making this civilization a force to be reckoned with.

The Mongols are a nomadic civilization whose economy relies on gathering resources from wherever they end up. Its military might boasts its high mobility which can be perfect for initiating, flanking, and retreating, which is why most upgrades in this aspect are focused on its horse-mounted archers called the Mangudai. Due to their nomadic nature, the Mongols are aggressive when it comes to acquiring resources and will have no struggle fighting for them.

The Rus are born from the harsh winters of the uppermost parts of the northern hemisphere; thus, they are known to demonstrate survival skills in the wild. Hunting animals and lumber production is what keeps this civilization’s economy alive while its military might is enhanced by their warrior monk. The Rus can easily acquire the resources they need from nature while its defensive capabilities are more focused on ranged fighters, particularly on its gunpowder unit the Streltsy.

Age of Empires IV presents players with different options that will suit their play style. This game will test your knowledge of military strategy as well as politics and the economy, but if you’re a new player, you don’t have to be pressured with having to learn a lot about the ins and outs of those topics since the gameplay sticks to the fundamentals of producing and maintaining resources as well as defending your territory from outsiders.
